Avoiding Impulse Shopping
Impulse shopping can be defined as any purchase made in the heat of the
moment; in most cases, a non essential item. To some; impulse shopping may be
somewhat of a new idea, for most this has been a way of life since we were
children. At one point in each of our lives we have all impulse shopped. We may
be at the grocery store and purchase a pack of gum at the register, while
strolling thru the mall we may stop and purchase a CD, or we may pull off to the
side of the road to buy a trinket or two. Impulse shopping can be fun and
satisfying; however, it can have a negative impact on your finances. Here are
some tips on how to avoid impulse shopping.
If you Impulse Shop, Never Use a Credit Card
For some of us; impulse shopping is okay in moderation, however if you choose
to continue to impulse shop, ensure you do it with cash. One of the top reasons
to follow this principle is to remember; purchasing that item with a credit card
can cost you two to three times as much if purchased with a credit card versus
cash. In addition, you can repay for several years on a credit card. Credit
cards may be convenient; however, in the long run they are extremely costly. The
interest paid alone can make that sale item become quite pricey.

Never Shop because you are Bored
Most of us shop when we are bored as an excuse to spend money. If you are one
of those individuals that perceive shopping as affordable entertainment; you are
one of the select few. For those of us that are in debt or have limited income,
shopping due to boredom will get us into financial trouble.
Utilize a Shopping List at the Grocery Store
A lot of us think that most impulse shopping takes place in shopping malls,
when in fact the most prominent place that people impulse shop is at the
supermarket. Supermarkets specifically design their stores to persuade the
consumer to impulse shop. Have you ever noticed that milk is at the very back of
the store? This is intentional; the supermarket wants you to walk by several
different items, hoping that you purchase at least one. There are two things
that can be effective in avoiding impulse shopping. The first rule of thumb is
to never shop hungry. When you go to the supermarket hungry you are more likely
to purchase unnecessary items and more junk food. Second, always use a shopping
list. By utilizing a shopping list you will know exactly what you want and be
far less inclined to impulse shop.
